Dear Parents/ Guardians,

The students in Year 4 have had a wonderful start to the school year! We have outlined the expectations of a Year 4 student, and all students have revised the School Values and have agreed to demonstrate these values at every opportunity.

Respect  Responsibility  Honesty  Resilience  Learning

We are really looking forward to working with you to make sure that each student receives the best educational experience possible. We have many exciting plans and things to share together this year. Throughout the year, we will be posting copies of the ‘Year 4- Term Newsletters’ onto Compass to help keep you informed about what is happening at school. All students are expected to be in full uniform every day. Our school uniform supplier is Academy Uniforms. You can order the Greenvale Primary School uniform either online at or at the Academy Uniform shop at 238 Wolseley Place, Thomastown during the following hours – Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm and Saturday 9am – 12noon. Second-hand uniforms will still be sold from the school office:

  • all students must wear the school uniform bucket hat with the school logo
  • school shoes should be mostly black or mostly white- no colours
  • hair accessories must be white, black or green
  • students may wear a watch and/or small sleeper earrings- no other jewellery is to be worn
  • strictly no nail polish.

Meet and Greet:

During Week 4, parents and guardians are invited to attend a short 10 minute session to meet your child’s teacher in a one on one situation. We encourage all parents to make the time to meet the teacher and discuss our expectations for the year ahead. You should have received a notice about this. Please take the time to complete the feedback form sent out. Bring it along to the Meet and Greet session with your child’s teacher in Week 4.

Late Arrivals:

The school day starts promptly at 9am. When students arrive late they often miss valuable instructions and can cause disruptions to the school day. If your child is late to school, a late pass is required from the school office.

Unexplained Absences:

If your child has been absent, please send a note to the classroom teacher as soon as your child returns to school (this is a legal requirement). You can phone the school office, send a note, send an update via the Compass app or email your child’s teacher directly.

This term we are developing student curiosity through Play. During this unit students will learn to play fairly and understand the importance of getting along.

In Reading, we will be unpacking the novel ‘Because of Winn-Dixie’. There will be a strong focus on comprehending the text through a variety of strategies, such as vocabulary, summarising and finding the main idea.

This term, our students will be exploring a variety of poetry. They will also be enhancing their writing skills by writing persuasive letters.

In Math, students will expand their number knowledge by counting in a variety of ways and becoming familiar with a place value of whole numbers and decimals. They will also investigate angles and 2D shapes.

SMART SPELLING: This term, students will be continuing with our SMART Spelling program. Our students will improve their spelling through exposures to spelling patterns and regularity – with an emphasis on meaning and vocabulary development.

Home Learning:

In Year 4, home learning is not compulsory however we encourage all students to complete the minimum of:

  • 2 x SMART spelling activities per week
  • Any incomplete work from the school day
  • 15 minutes of reading a night

Children love to celebrate their birthday at school and we are happy for you to bring something to school for your child to share with their classmates, as long as it is individually wrapped, such as a Freddo Frog bar or wrapped lollipop. Each class has an average of 28 students.

Thank you for your support.
