Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to Year 3!

The students have had a wonderful start to the school year. We have been busy getting to know each other and settling into our classroom routine.  We are looking forward to working with you to support your child’s learning as we transition to the ‘middle school’ and become more independent and resilient. We aim to become happy, creative and curious learners!

The students have been busy with the new ‘Greenvale Primary School Start Up Program’ which is a program that focuses on understanding the school values and the expectations of a Year 3 student.

Late Arrivals and Early Pick Ups

The school day starts promptly at 9.00am. If your child is late to school, a late pass is required and they will need to sign in at the school office before they come into the classroom. If your child comes straight to the classroom, they will be directed to the office as all late sign ins will go through Compass. If you need to pick your child up before the school day finishes, please notify your child’s teacher prior. If they do need to be picked up early, please try to avoid recess and lunch breaks. This makes it very difficult to pack them up and have them ready to go. You will need to sign your child out at the office when you arrive.

Meet and Greet

In Week Four, we have our ‘Meet and Greet’ week. Our interview nights are on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th February.  We are looking forward to meeting you and finding out more about your child and how they learn. Please bring along your completed interview sheet on the night.

In Literacy, we are very excited about starting the year with a class novel study on Charlottes Web and we will also be reading numerous picture story books, newspaper articles and various non-fiction texts. We will also be exploring a range of reading and writing strategies. Our Mathematics sessions will focus on Place Value, Counting and Graphing. Our Curiosity focus for the term is “What happens when you Press Play?”. During this unit we will be discussing the qualities of good friends, manners, fair play and more!

Organisation and Communication

There are various ways to keep up to date with what is going on around the school. Please ensure that you download the free school app Qkr, Compass and access the school website on a regular basis. School newsletters are also available via email and from the school office.

All Year 3 students have a school diary. Encourage your child to read their diary each night to help prepare for daily activities such as library, specialist classes or school events. Their diary may also be used to communicate specific messages to you also, so please ensure you encourage your child to show you their diary each night.

All students are expected to be in full uniform every day. Our school uniform supplier is Academy Uniforms. You can order the Greenvale Primary School uniform either online at or at the Academy Uniform shop at 238 Wolseley Place, Thomastown during the following hours – Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm and Saturday 9am – 12noon. Second hand uniforms will still be sold from the school office:

  • all students must wear the school uniform bucket hat with the school logo
  • school shoes should be mostly black or mostly white- no colours
  • hair accessories must be white, black or green
  • students may wear a watch and/or small sleeper ear rings- no other jewellery is to be worn
  • strictly no nail polish.

‘Home Learning’ Reading: at least 20 minutes a night.

In addition to nightly reading there will be an optional numeracy and literacy task sent home with your child to revise and consolidate skills that we have been learning in class.

In your child’s communication pouch each week there will be a text to read and could be either non-fiction or fiction, a poem, song or newspaper article. Students will also be bringing home a Home Reading book that is differentiated to suit your child’s learning needs. The expectation is that your child will read to an adult each night.

Children love to celebrate their birthday at school and we are happy for you to bring something to school for your child to share with their classmates, as long as it is individually wrapped, such as a Freddo Frog bar or wrapped lollipop. Each class has an average of 28 students.
