This term, the Years 3 and 4 students will continue to have their 2 hour weekly Science lesson. The focus for Term 4 is Chemical Science exploring Solids, Liquids and Gases and Materials of everyday use.
At the beginning, the students looked at Solids, Liquids and Gases. Students conducted and observed chemical reactions in their experiments exploring the changes between the different states of solids, liquids and gases. Some experiments include Melting Ice, Baking Soda and Vinegar and Making crystals. They practised writing a Scientific Report by completing a prediction prior to their experiment, recording data on tables, noting down observations and evaluating their experiment through a conclusion. Students challenged themselves scientifically to understand the cause of heat and cooling to initiate a chemical reaction by explaining this in their conclusion.
Students are now moving their investigation to Properties of Materials. They have explored man-made and natural materials of metal, plastic, fibre and glass by researching examples of these materials and their uses in everyday life. Students fulfilled a Scavenger Hunt to understand their strength and limitations as a property in its role for specific objects. They will be now completing experiments to test the strength and resistance to water on a material. This will follow by identifying ways materials can be reused or recycled through STEM activities.
Students will continue to actively engage in their thinking and questioning to prompt deep conversations about science through their learning this term.
