This semester, the Years 3 and 4 students will have a 2 hour weekly science lesson. The focus for Term 3 is Biological Science and during Term 4, students will complete a unit of work focused on Chemical Science.
During the term, the students have looked at “Living”, “Non-living” and “Once” living things, followed by the life cycles of living organisms. Students have developed their inquiry skill of forming predictions, observations and conclusions about particular plants, animals and fossils. They also had the opportunity to create dinosaur fossils using salt dough to reflect on the Once living organisms. Through student agency, their curiosity led to the plants and its life cycles. To observe the life cycle, students plant grass seeds into cups using coconut coir – a sustainable source of dirt to monitor the cycle.
This will be connected to the concept of food chains of producers, consumers and decomposers. Students will study mini beast insects and understand their role as a consumer in the environment, particularly the process of pollination. They will conduct an experiment using Cheetos to model the effect of pollen among creatures understand the impact it has on the ecosystem.
This unit will encourage students to understand the cycle within the environment and how the ecosystem is a valuable asset to our daily lives.
