Science Experiment – Solar Ovens

Throughout Term 1, the Year Four students have been learning how to work responsibly in collaborative groups. This has involved students working in small groups of three or four, and each person taking on a specific role to help their group achieve a common goal.

Students demonstrated their skills during a science experiment related to solar energy. Students worked within their collaborative groups to create a solar oven using a cardboard box and tin foil. The students had to follow a given set of instructions and work together to create the oven and make a delicious chocolate – marshmallow treat.

The photos below demonstrate the wonderful team work skills students developed throughout the activity – and the amazing fun they had!

Class Captains – Term 1

The Year 4 team would like to congratulate the Class Captains for Term 1! These students were voted and selected by their peers to represent the Year 4 cohort. The Class Captains have been given a wonderful opportunity to grow as leaders within the school and to represent the school values of respect, responsibility, honesty, resilience and learning. We wish them all the very best on their leadership journey!

Greenvale GreenGrocers

On Friday 20th November the Year 4 students participated in the exciting Greenvale Green Grocers market day! Students prepared, planted, picked and washed a variety of organic veggies to sell to their families. Below are just some of the yummy veggies we had to offer!

Each student wrote a persuasive letter to their families, convincing them to come and support our school community. They prepared colourful posters and catchy slogans and phrases, which they shared all afternoon. A huge thank you to all the families who came to support our wonderful Greenvale Green Grocers!

Veggie Garden

This term the Year 4 students are very busy integrating their Economics unit of study with their reading and writing program in the classroom.

The students worked hard to prepare soil and plant a variety of vegetables and herbs in their very own veggie garden! Students take turns watering and pruning the wonderful variety of produce and will eventually pick, prepare and sell to the local community!

To convince families to purchase from our organic veggie garden, the students are busy creating catchy slogans, jingles, television advertisements and persuasive texts! They will also practise their mathematical thinking skills when they create a budget and calculate profit after the sale of all the yummy veggies!

Life Cycles

During our Term 3 Science Unit, the Year Four students explored the life cycles of living things, including plants and animals.

Students were super excited to grow their very own broad beans inside a glass jar! Over the course of 4 weeks students observed and monitored the growth of their broad beans and recorded the various stages of development.

With a little water, sunshine and TLC, the students were amazed at how quickly their broad beans sprouted and flourished!

In addition, students impressed with their wonderful research projects on the life cycles of various animals.

Teachers were amazed at the students’ creativity and very impressed with their improved confidence during oral presentations!

‘Egg’cellent Egg-Drop

As part of our Term 3 Science Unit, the Year 4 students explored the properties of natural and processed materials. Students were asked to design and construct a special package that could house a raw egg and keep it from breaking when dropped from a high distance. Needless to say ‘eggcellent’ fun was had by all!

Forces in Action

Our sensational Year 4 scientists participated in an exciting ‘Mad About Science’ Workshop, exploring Newton’s Three Laws of Motion through a range of fun and hands-on experiments!

Students worked in pairs and small groups to explore the elements of gravity, lift, friction and force. Curiosity and chaos ruled the day as students had fun balancing and spinning objects – spinning propellers were a favourite!
