This week the Junior School Council reps for 2018 were announced at the morning assembly. The Year 4 team would like to congratulate Asli from 4MP and Emmanuel from 4RW for being announced as the new Junior School Council Reps for Year 5. It is a very exciting time for the new JSC reps and the Year 4 team would like to wish them a fantastic year as they take on board their new leadership roles for 2018. Well done!
As part of their Geography unit on the Congo Rainforest, Year 4 students raised money for the Dian Fossey Gorilla fund. To raise money, students made gold coin donations and participated in a competition to guess how many banana lollies were placed into a jar. Congratulations to Asli in 4MP who guessed correctly! The money raised by students will be going towards the adoption of a Mountain Gorilla in Africa, where they are looked after by staff at the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.
As part of their unit on Africa, the Year 4 students visited CERES Community Environmental Park. Students were taken on a tour around the park where they were provided with experiences which explored African culture. During the excursion they participated in water collecting and learnt how to play the Djembe. Students also learnt about traditional African ceremonies such as weddings and participated in a role-played African wedding! Here are some photos from the day.
During week 3 the Year 4 students celebrated Italian week. Students came to school dressed in Italian colours and began the celebration by watching a few Italian performances at the school morning assembly. Students also enjoyed watching a musical play in the school gym. The play was filled with laughter and the students enjoyed watching it. During the week students also celebrated Italian week by having a Italian feast in their classrooms! During lunch time they ate pizzas, crostoli’s and different flavoured gelati. They looked molto bellisimo! Here are some photos from the play.
This week the Year 3 and 4 students celebrated book week. To celebrate, all students dressed up in some of their favourite book characters and participated in a parade. Students were very creative with their costumes and they looked fantastic! The parade began with a great introduction from Ms Trunchbull from Matilda and then students paraded around the BER building, showing their costumes. As part of the parade, students and teachers voted for 1st and 2nd best costume in their classrooms. Next week, the library team will be choosing their 1st and 2nd best costumes and will be announcing them at morning assembly. Thank-you to the library staff and year 3/4 team for helping to organise a fantastic day!

As part of their Science unit on ‘Change’ students in Year 4 have been learning about ‘heat.’ Students have been exploring how heat affects different ingredients such as butter, wax, copha and chocolate. After observing what happens, they gave reasons for their results and recorded them in their inquiry books. Here is a before and after photo that was taken when some of the students melted butter!
Students were also interested about how copha can be used to make crackle – here is a link to a recipe that you could use to make chocolate crackles at home!
