100 Days of Year 1

In Mathematics the Year 1 students have been busy counting the number of school days. They found counting patterns and have used classroom number lines, tens frames, a 100s chart, as well as unifix and bundles and sticks to represent tens and ones.

On Friday the 27th of July, the Year 1s celebrated their 100th day of school. Each child brought in 100 items of their choice. This may have included household objects, lollies or toys. Students used their knowledge of an efficient method of skip counting such as by 2s, 5s, or 10s to determine whether they did indeed bring 100 items. They then wrote about the number 100 and participated in games and craft activities to acknowledge being 100 days smarter.

Below are some photos of the festivities and fun.

Year 1 Hands On Science Incursion

In week 7, students in Year 1 had the opportunity to attend the Hands-On Science incursion at school. Students participated in the lesson called “How Objects Move”. This session gave the students the opportunity to investigate the way objects move on land, through water and in the air. They explored design technologies that are used in different modes of transport including size, shape, push and pull forces, and movement. This included creating a model using Plasticine that would float in water. The students had lots of fun being scientists for the day as shown in the photos below.

Year 1 Science Incursion

The Year 1 students have been busy designing, creating and evaluating a number of items this term while working collaboratively with their peers during STEM activities. Students have made moveable toys and a shelter for an animal and they will continue constructing various objects over the next few weeks. In week 8, the Year 1 students had the opportunity to attend a Hands on Science Incursion to continue to develop their skills and knowledge in this area. During the session students predicted and experimented with various materials to determine how things could float, move and fly.

It was a wonderful experience for the students who thoroughly enjoyed the incursion. Below are some photos of the day.
