The Great Year Five Bake-Off

The Great Bake-Off 2015 was a huge success. The year five students have been busy all this term exploring recipes, sourcing the best prices for ingredients, creating a budget and preparing advertising posters. Over the weekend they met up with their group to shop and prepare their product for the Bake-Off.

On Monday, the 16th of November, the students set up their stalls and the rest of the school came to visit to purchase their delicious treats! Yum, yum!

We are proud to announce that classes 5SC and 5C raised a total of $677.00 which will be donated to UNICEF Australia to help support and fund children’s rights to education, sanitation, medical care, clean water and nutrition.

5LD and 5SM raised a total of $897.80c to be donated to the Sanfilippo Children’s Foundation, which is trying to find a cure for a rare genetic brain condition where sufferers do not tend to live beyond 12-20 years.

Year 2 – Term 4 STEM Investigations

For the past 4 weeks, the Year 2 students have been undertaking STEM investigations each week.

What is STEM? STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Each task integrates these 4 areas of the curriculum.

Pre-Test: The students in Year 2 had to draw and list features for each of the 4 fields. They then had 2 presentations from each expert in their field. At the end of the unit of work, the students will revisit their initial drawings and vocabulary to see if their knowledge about each area had improved.

Science – Vanessa Reali (Scientist)

Technology – Meredith Martell (Library Technician)

Engineering – Grant Symons (Telecommunications Engineer)

Mathematics – Duncan Symons (University of Melbourne Lecturer in Mathematics and Science)

Investigation 1: Making an Action Toy

Students looked at samples of toys that moved due to a push or a pull. Students were allowed to use split pins, card and scrap materials to design and make an action toy. There had to be a labelled diagram included in the design brief and reasons as to why the materials were chosen. Students were able to identify the push and pull features in the toy.

Hooptime Regional Finals

On Monday the 9th of November the All Star Boys and Girls Hooptime teams competed at the regional finals at the Mill Park Basketball Studium.

With the competition being very fierce, the All Star Boys team had a mix of results throughout the day, unfortunately missing out on the grand final by one game.
The All Star Girls successfully won their into their grand final, but unfortunately fell one win short of securing a place at the state championships.

Well done to all of the students involved, you should all be extremely proud of your efforts to represent Greenvale Primary School at such a high level.

Special thank you’s go to Kellie Kalolo and Shane Gillard for coaching the teams, as well as Sharon Matuauto and Jess Okines for assisting on the scoring desk.
